Are you thinking about getting Botox? This popular treatment has been around for a very long time in and we are all familiar with its ability to eradicate wrinkles and lines from our faces by temporatily paralyzing muscles.

Various antiaging procedures have come and gone, yet Botox continues to maintain its popularity in the aesthetics field, thanks to its excellent results, minimal downtime and almost non-existent side effects.

As safe as it sounds, it’s still important for you to do your research before you commit to this procedure. Lucky for you, we’ve rounded up the top 8 things you need to know before getting Botox.

#1 Know where your injectable is from

For any substance that’s going to be injected into you, it’s not at all trivial to ask your doctor where it’s from. Currently the top (and safe) manufacturers for botox and fillers are Allergan, Merz and Galderma.

#2 Beware of bargains

If the price is too good to be true, it usually is. Don’t hesitate to call around different clinics to find out what they are charging. This will give you a good idea of the average cost of Botox procedures and to manage your expectations on costs.

#3 Know what to avoid pre-injection

A veteran aesthetic doctor will give you a list of anticoagulants to avoid pre-injection, such as aspirin and ibuprofen as such drugs hinder blood clotting and increase the risk of bruising.

Do not hesitate to ask your doctor at least two weeks in advance for the full list of items to avoid before and even after your procedure.

#4 A consultation is only necessary

An experience doctor will have a face to face consultation with you to assess your face and its expressions, and to understand the areas you want treated. The aim of the whole procedure is have your face look refreshed and not frozen and expressionless.  A consultation will also allow the doctor to assess your facial expressions

#5 Expect some downtime

For a few hours after the procedure, you may be advised to avoid applying any makeup, exercising or doing anything that could affect the injected zones. This is to prevent the toxin from spreading and weakening its effects.  You also should not be on a flight several hours after this procedure as the change in cabin pressure can affect the spread of the toxin to muscles you do not want affected.

#6 The Botox Buzz

When Botox is given between the brows, it can cause a temporary sensation of dizziness of headache, which some doctors refer to as the Botox Buzz. This is a result from the slight swelling in the area where the fluid has been injected and should dissipate within 10 to 15 minutes.
