At SW1, we love exploring technologies beyond our comfort zone and trying out exciting breakthrough technologies. Just like how our doctors were the first to use the now popular Ultherapy and the Fraxel laser for skin rejuvenation in Singapore, the picosecond laser is an exciting new laser device which our doctors are discovering for anti-aging and complexion smoothing needs. Using ultra-short bursts of energy, the picosecond laser hits your skin in one trillionth of a second, delivering a powerful punch to your skin’s problems, without damaging normal skin surrounding it.
What is it?
The Pico Smooth treatment uses a fractionated picosecond laser instead of the carbon dioxide laser to smoothen out acne scars. Unlike the carbon dioxide laser which needs to be judiciously used in darker skin individuals to avoid complications, Pico Smooth can offer the same dramatic treatment, with significantly lower risks.
How does it work?
FDA cleared for treatment of acne scars and wrinkles, Pico Smooth is the latest and most innovative laser to hit the market. Pico Smooth’s photoacoustic beam creates pressure waves that initiate an enhanced inflammatory healing response, resulting in an increased production of collagen and elastin. It creates micro-injuries just under the topmost layer of the skin, initiated by absorption of the high energy picosecond light. These intra-epidermal cavities result from areas of laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB), consistent with a localized plasma formation in the epidermis initiated by the melanin absorption of the high energy picosecond light. Pico Smooth harnesses the power of fractionated picosecond laser technology and when combined with SW1 medical team’s signature treatment technique, it is able to deliver significant anti-aging and complexion rejvenative benefits with low downtime, compared to traditional resurfacing lasers. Pico Smooth gives hope to skin with facial acne scars as well as wrinkles, as it deeply stimulates a natural repair mechanism, resulting in growth of new collagen and elastic tissue.
The Pico Smooth treatment uses a unique setting discovered by our doctors to induce micro-zones of injury optically (using picosecond light energy, rather than heat), so as to stimulate a natural skin repair mechanism, which generates collagen.
Is it safe for dark skin individuals?
Traditional ablative lasers which vaporize skin tend to have higher risks of hyperpigmentation and delayed hypopigmentation especially in people with dark skin. Pico Smooth harnesses the optical advantage of the picosecond laser to create zones of injury, which generates significantly less heat compared to its ablative counterparts, therefore the same treatment used in light skin individuals can be achieved in darker skin types but with much lower risks of complications.
How does it feel like?
With a little bit of numbing, only a very mild prickling sensation is experienced at parts of the face. The picosecond laser operates at a much faster speed compared to the carbon dioxide laser, so most patients are barely aware of it working, and if they do, the laser has usually moved on to another part of the face.
The skin will be mildly pink by the end of the whole treatment. Light makeup can be applied immediately post laser. Very mild red and brownish dots will likely be present for a few days on some parts of the face and any redness will usually resolve completely within 3 to 4 days.
