Scar Revision Surgery

A scar is formed when our body tries to bridge a wound, a proof of the body’s gift of healing. However, this repair work often cannot restore the skin back to its original appearance. During healing, the collagen that forms the scar is laid down in a haphazard manner, leading to a scarred appearance.  Scars improve in appearance over time, a process called scar remodelling.  It usually takes 1-2 years but can take up to 3-5 years for thickened hypertrophic scars. Some individuals may be prone toand develop keloid scars, which may not go away or even grow larger. Looks aside, some scars can cause itch, pain or movement restriction.

As there are many types of scars, our doctors will assess your scar/s and customise a treatment plan best suited for your scar type.

Scar Revision Surgery

Using specialised plastic surgical techniques, the scars are surgically removed or adjusted. Scar revision surgery will enhance the appearance of unaesthetic scar, such as thickened, widened or puckered scars. Revision surgery will also improve the function of problematic scars, such as those that cause movement restrictions. After scar revision surgery, it is recommended to continue with scar reduction options to maximise the control of scar formation. These options will help with all scars, and not only after scar revision surgery.

Scar Reduction Options

Expediting wound healing will improve scarring. In general, the longer it takes for a wound to heal, the more scarring will take place. Photomodulation using Light Emitting Diodes, or LED, is one way to activate new collagen formation and enhance wound healing. After injury or surgery, it helps to start a multi-modal scar program, like the Scar Prevention Program which combines LED Light Therapy, with Fraxel and VBeam lasers. For established scars, the Scar Intervention Program synergistically combines 2 lasers to effectively improve scar quality – the VBeam laser to calm scar activity and SmartX to flatten and soften scars.
